The world always feels like it’s going to end, that’s nothing new. It certainly felt that way when we released SPORTS back in 2010. The BP Deepwater Horizon was pumping hundreds of millions of gallons of flaming oil into the gulf (part of the inspiration behind our first music video). Earthquakes in Haiti and Chile leveled entire cities. “Government” was an open question as full-on revolution ripped through the Arab world. On and on...Flirting with that edge of the end, both as a society, and as individuals, was always a major force behind our music.
It’s 10 years later now. The world is still here. Still on the edge of collapse. We are still here. Getting older. Learning to live in that perpetual state of apocalypse. Trying to find personal equilibriums that didn’t exist before, and trying to find ways to do some good in the world, as we will expire well before it does.
To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of SPORTS this Friday, we will be releasing a live album of bootleg tracks from the record called WINS + LOSSES. Please pay what you can for this comp -- we are donating 100% of the proceeds to the SF Aids Foundation, a non-profit who provides harm-reduction and addiction rehabilitation services for people in San Francisco, many of whom are experiencing houselessness.
These are bootleg recordings, made by sneaky individuals in the crowd, not professionals. We think they are pretty neat and represent what it felt like to be there at the shows - a place we are all missing right now and hope we can get back to soon. They were however professionally mastered by the indomitable Sarah Register (who toured extensively with Weekend as Talk Normal during the “Sports era”).
Special thanks to Frank Chan, thehappyone, and bigcrashingbeat who helped us track down these recordings through their secretive underground bootlegger networks.
And finally - if you are interested in supporting the band and our forthcoming record (it’s coming we promise), we are releasing two limited edition SPORTS anniversary shirts, celebrating the creative genius of graphic designer Jeff Brush - who made the original SPORTS album art and many other weekend related items including the new WINS + LOSSES album art.
Much Love,
Weekend (Kevin, Shaun, and Abe)
